Drag bar? No men? Under 20 something heaven!.
I was visiting OKC on Friday, 5/1/2009. I went to the Phoenix Rising and was expecting to see some real men. To my shock, it was the Friday night drag show. The bar was full of 20 something twinks running around screaming. Apparently, the Phoenix has changed since I was last there 2 years earlier. Drag shows are OK when it’s a benefit fund raiser. I don’t expect to see drag queens and twinks running around in what should be a man’s bar on a Friday night. I recommend changing the name to Flamingo Flying. At least this name reflects the crowd inside.
Great bar for relaxing - best Friday Happy Hour in town!.
I don't usually post reviews, but the one review on this site is very unfair. Phoenix Rising is one of the few bars that freepours their drinks. The owners and staff are extremely friendly. I have many straight friends who go to this bar with me and they are always treated fairly and with respect.
They have a great patio, and the owners have put in lots of work to make the place relaxing and inviting. This isn't a dance bar, although they do have a dance floor. The bar isn't always packed - which can be a good thing. You can usually find a place to sit and it's not so noisy that you can't hear each other talk.
Their Friday Happy Hour is fantastic! They have both hot and cold snacks and they are always tasty!
This is a great place to meet after work, or on Friday and Saturday nights if you want to be out but not crushed by the crowds at the other bars.
Another plus is the owners are usually always on site. Something the other bars could learn something from.
Straight People beware- Discrimination in every sense of the word. My companion and I have never been treated so rudely at an bar!.
If your Straight- be wary of Phoenix Rising! I have never had such a bad experience at a bar in my entire life! My companion and I were rudely asked to leave- We paid for our drinks- We danced, drank and had a good time. Up until one of the OWNERS chewed out my friend for requesting a song. This is a simple request- Which most bars seem to comply with. They disrecpected my female companion and tried to ruin our night. This is a fine example of Gay people bashing Straights- It does work both ways. I have been there before and it was fun- But things have changed due to the OWNERS attitude. I will contact my friends who I told about this bar and tell them what they did to me and my companion- I will not stand idely by and be mocked by an establishment that does not accept Straight people.
We only went there because we knew we could get a seat and dance. The place is a joke! There were less then 15 people there on Memorial Day weekend. While all the other bars on the strip were packed with people!
Phoenix Pising- Could learn alot from the other bars on the strip.
1st off- Be polite to your customers- Dont show an arrogant attitude like you are God of the World.
2nd- Watered down drinks will have people going to other bars. Sure you could save some of your liquor, but by doing so- You will lose customers.
3rd- Discrimination is a crime! Once people hear about this word spreads, and gets around quite nicely. I have been told by another one of my female companions that she was also discriminated against- By the OWNERS! And by law they are accountable for their actions!
4th- The place is dirty! The dance floor was sticky- If you are going to own a club, at least take care of it. The tables were not clean either. We had to clean up the table we wanted to sit at. Most likely because we were a man and a woman?!
Lastly- You have driven away paying customers with your attitude! You wont make another yr by treating people so badly. I am mad and disgusted!
