Screwing me with my payments!
by Ktbeve at Citysearch
So, I started my membership at At the Beach summer 2008 by signing a contract and having them take monthly widthdraws from my bank account.
Well the last several months they haven't been withdrawing money from my account so I just assumed that my membership was up(since it had been about a year). Well, I go into one of the stores to see if I still have a membership and to cancel that membership or freeze it since its almost December and I don't need a tan in the winter. Turns out that they have been charging my card and it has been getting declined because I had to get a new debit card because mine got stolen. I understand that I am responsible for giving them my new card number. But! Instead of trying to contact me to resolve the problem, At The Beach decides that they are just going to keep charging my old card and charging me extra since it kept getting declined. Now myself as well as my husband owe them about $167 a piece because they also failed to contact him about the situation. Keep in mind I would never have known about if I didn't go in to cancel my membership in the first place.
Another thing that really ticks me off is that I tried to change my last name and address several months ago because I had just gotten married and moved. I'm talking several months as in like ten months ago and they never changed it. So if they would have changed all my information when I asked them to in the first place this wouldn't be happening and I'd still be a satisfied customer. So everytime I went to tan I had to give them two different last names because I wasn't sure what name they had me under. When I asked the associate why it was taking so long she just told me that it was something corporate dealt with and she had no control over it.
Now I would like some opinions. Do you think that it's OK for them to keep charging me like this without trying to contact me? I mean, I've gone in several times to tan while this has been going on and the store associate didn't bother to mention that my account was two months overdue. Nobody at corporate tried to email me, they said that they tried to call me on October 13 and they said I answered and said it was the wrong number. But, I am 100% positive that they didn't call and I certainly didn't answer because I checked my October bill and there is no call from them that day. So they lied too? Awesome, great way to keep loyal customers. NOT! Is that how you should run a business? Has anybody else experience this BS?
- Cons: Liars, devious, horrible customer service.
Run as fast as you can in the opposite direction!

I won a free week of tanning through a local radio station, so took my coupon in to check it out. I was told that they would waive my $85 membership fee in lieu of the free week if I signed a contract. I did so, and agreed to unlimited tanning at $63 per month. Well, it didn't take long to figure out that the beds suck, and you are "forced" to purchase their products in order for the beds to tan properly. What a load of crap! I am now taking them to court to break the contract, because no one from corporate will call me back! Stay away from these scammers!!! I feel like rating them one star is being generous.
- Pros: None
- Cons: Too many to list
A great place to tan

I have been tanning with At the Beach on and off for years, even back when they only had 3 locations and were open 24 hours. What I enjoy about tanning there is the great choice of beds and the fact that they offer monthly plans where I can pay one price monthly and tan as much as I like.
I have had had both the long term membership, and the short term membership and each had it's advantage, but I never felt like I had been tricked or cheated into purchaseing a membership.
- Pros: Clean Stores, Great Hours, Friendly employees
